Cotton vs Blended Fabrics: What to Look for in Loungewear

Cotton vs Blended Fabrics: What to Look for in Loungewear

When you slip into a pair of pyjamas at the end of a long day, the last thing you want to think about is fabric composition. But that little label on the inside seam — the one that says 95% cotton, 5% elastane — has a bigger impact on how your loungewear feels, breathes, and ages than almost anything else.

Why cotton is the gold standard for loungewear

Cotton has been the go-to fabric for sleepwear and loungewear for generations, and for good reason. It’s naturally breathable, soft against the skin, and absorbs moisture efficiently — which means it keeps you cool in summer and comfortably warm in winter. Unlike synthetic fibres, cotton doesn’t trap heat or create that clammy feeling that makes you want to kick the covers off at 2 AM.

For everyday loungewear, look for combed cotton or ring-spun cotton. These processes remove short fibres and align the long ones, producing a smoother, stronger yarn. The result is fabric that feels softer from the first wear and resists pilling longer than standard carded cotton.

Why a little stretch goes a long way

Pure cotton is wonderful, but it has one drawback in fitted loungewear: it doesn’t stretch. A 100% cotton pyjama will hold its shape beautifully, but if you want a slim-fit jogger or a fitted sleep tee that moves with you, you need a small amount of elastane (also known as spandex or Lycra).

The sweet spot is 95% cotton, 5% elastane. This blend gives you the breathability and softness of cotton with just enough stretch to keep the garment snug without sagging. The elastane helps the fabric recover its shape after washing, so your pyjamas don’t become baggy after a few wears.

What to avoid

Be cautious of loungewear labelled simply as “cotton blend” without specifying the ratio. Blends with high percentages of polyester may feel soft initially but tend to pill, trap odours, and lose their shape faster. They also don’t breathe as well, which matters if you run warm at night or live in a humid climate.

The wash test

The real test of any fabric is how it holds up after repeated washing. Good quality cotton or cotton-elastane blends should:

  • Retain their colour without significant fading after 20+ washes
  • Feel soft, not stiff, coming out of the dryer
  • Maintain their shape without stretching at the knees or seat
  • Show minimal pilling on high-friction areas like the inner thighs

If your loungewear is pilling heavily or losing its shape within the first month, it’s likely a lower-quality blend — and a sign to check the fabric composition next time you shop.

The bottom line

For loungewear that feels good, lasts long, and gets better with every wash, prioritise cotton-rich fabrics. A 95/5 cotton-elastane blend offers the best of both worlds: the natural comfort of cotton and the flexibility of a small amount of stretch. Your skin — and your laundry pile — will thank you.
